Conventions of short films

For my research into short films, I’ve had to watch a variety of short films. From doing this I have come to a realisation that makers of shorts films take into account a number of things that the viewers don’t seem to notice.
Some of these things include:
  • Most feature films' camerawork is very smooth because the camera is supported by a tripod. On the other hand the camerawork in short films is usually handheld because of budget restrictions and this can also make the film appear more realistic to the audience
  • Short films can be a lot more experimental with their editing, creating an unique style for the paticular film. The editing can make the visuals of a short film more interesting as it's different from what the audience may be used to seeing with feature films
  • Some short films use non-diegetic music to create a certain impact on the audience. Whereas other short films that want to be more realistic, will rely diogetic sounds in the background or from the characters' dialogue
  • Most short films MES consists with being in a home as this could be an easier option for the making of the film and also because there will be no cost. Along with this, I have noticed there is a lot of outdoor area, such as fields roads etc. being used for the same reasons. The MES is very minimalistic within short films as in, clothing, lighting effects, props, make up etc. I think the MES is very dependent on the budget for a short film

Experiment

With our newly painted green screen Tiff and I filmed a short film so we were able to try out all the effects that were available to us when using Final Cut Pro.

It took us about 2 hours to do everything. This includes filming, editing, putting sound over the top etc. Most of the time was took up by editing as we wanted to try out as much as possible, so when it comes to editing our own short film again we know what to do and what its capable of.

We got the background from YouTube and also the music, we just needed to convert it into the right format.
